Overview

International Mother Language Day, observed on February 21, promotes linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Established by UNESCO in 1999, it honors the 1952 Bengali Language Movement in Bangladesh, where students sacrificed their lives advocating for their mother tongue. The day raises awareness of the importance of preserving endangered languages and encourages inclusive education in native languages to foster cultural identity and social harmony.
